Album order/theme and title workshop...Some ideas brought forth:
-Sgt. Pepper inspired cover
-Election
-Washington Sq. Park with characters popping out of it
-The Clive Davis Dept. of Recorded Music logo
-Punk looking: ripped up pictures of the department

I like the Sgt Pepper inspired idea as well as the Washington Sq. Park idea. I think the Washington Sq. Park idea is great because it relates to both NYC and NYU.
Thoughts? more ideas?

that video is brilliant!!! who left that? anyway, thanks for the comment on my idea. i think "in the city" is too broad as well, but I was just inspired by the city and, well...i know, it's pretty lame.

what could we do with the name "clive" that wasn't so obvious?
The unicorn thing is growing on me but we need a catchy title to go with it, i don't think it's "unicorn planet"....or maybe....it could be?!!

"In the City" is a great topic to narrow down but I think it might be too general right now. What about being in the city could have inspired these songs, these musicians, what's a more descript common tie they all have? I can't think of one right now but hopefully that might get some minds in action!

Happy New Year all!

Lots of great things happening with 194 Recordings this year.

1) We're officially a club in the eyes of Tisch at NYU - basically this means they give us a little bit of $ to have our rockstars trash hotel rooms and such.

2) EVENTS - We have tons of amazing events coming up this semester, all leading up to the REMMY'S which are sure to blow your mind.

3) We picked tracks for our FIRST album! OMG! Now we just have to put the final touches on that, make it look pretty, and then you can buy it. I know you're at the edge of your seat in anticipation.

SUBMISSIONS...why would i want to join this label?

Hi all!
So, submissions are due before Thanksgiving break. They can either be submitted via 194recordings@gmail.com or in a live audition NEXT Friday, November 9th from 2-6pm!! The song you submit does not have to be a finished work, a good quality demo is all we need. The songs should go along with our theme of looking ahead in the next 4 years. This could be relating to school life, to politics, to your personal life, where you see yourself or others in the next 4 years. You don't need to be specific, it's just a starting point and something to make a cohesive compilation album.
Now some of you may be wondering, what's in it for me? Well there is a lot that one could benefit from by being part of the label. Our team will be dedicated to marketing and promoting you as an artist with various press releases, this year's CD compilation, and various showcases. We also want to help you build your press packet or portfolio, and are hoping to work with other Tisch and NYU students to accomplish this by utilizing the photography department, Music Videos 101 Tisch club, the Stern-Tisch Entertainment Business Association, and other venues available to us within and outside of NYU. We will also help with the recording process and help you in finding the right producer, engineer, mixer, if needed, and we're working on being able to receive studio time for the label.

ALSO...here's a rough sketch of what we went over at our first mtg...

-IDEA: Where the idea for the label came from
-Jonathan Fine approached the Dean, all the class reps got together.
-6 meetings of discussion, debate and brainstorming.
-MISSION: Label needed to stand for something and so our mission statement was born:

“194 Recordings is a record label born out of the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at New York University. Drawing on the unique talents of the young professionals within the department, 194 Recordings aims to provide a way for these students to actively display the skills they have learned through the department and from their own personal experiences in the music industry. Armed with aspiting producers, engineers, A&R executives, marketing specialists, record label executives and new media experts, 194 Recordings is poised to deliver unique artists and products to the music industry.
Focusing on socially conscious causes through music, 194 Recordings also aims to be more than a record label but rather a channel of expression for the artists with a real message to address. The label will also aim to use only certified environmentally safe, "green", resources in the creation of their products as their own way of contributing something to the community at large. In a time when so many students have lost touch with what it means to be part of a cause, 194 Recordings will stay true to it's socially conscious ways while also helping to give otherwise unheard artists a voice.”

-FIRST RELEASE: compilation or focus on 1-2 artists?
* LOTS of debate on this but ultimately decided that the first release should be a themed compilation so we can involve as many students as possible
*THEME: We discussed everything from only live recordings, to covering classic albums to politics. Ultimately, to go along with this “socially conscious” mission we wanted to do a theme of looking ahead, the next 4 years. Interpret this as you will but we want submissions of music that discuss the changes that will effect our lives, our country, our world in the next 4 years. Where do you see things going?

-STRUCTURE:
Marketing: Will plan out and execute the ultimate marketing plan for both the label and its releases.

Publicity: Will write press releases work to get press for the label.

A&R: Will coordinate the selection process for artists and student producers/engineers to work with each artist along with booking studio time for each project.

Business Affairs: Will handle all the business of 194 Recordings, such as the accounting and working on partnership opportunities for the label.

Events/Booking: Will work on booking shows for our artists and planning events related to the label.

New Media: Will handle website, blog, and internet promotion.

Art/Graphic Design: Will work on all the visual components involved in the look of the label – including the website and blog - along with handling the visual elements for each release on the label.

-SUBMISSIONS:
-The DEADLINE for submissions is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break (November 21st)

-We will accept submissions on CD. Also please attach a lyric sheet as well.

-If students looking for recording projects we can hook them up for next
semester with artists we have chosen for the compilation.

-Songs and producers will be chosen by CHRISTMAS BREAK to allow for them
to prepare to record the next semester.

HI ALL,
I'm very excited for Friday's meeting with everyone in REMU. The process of jump starting this label has been a journey, but a great one. And the journey is definitely not over yet!! I hope everyone who's interested in getting involved in the creation of the Recorded Music label joins me and the other class representatives on Friday October 12 for our OPENING NIGHT, where we'll hold 194 Recordings first Co-Presedential election. So after 5 (yes?) meetings we are finally getting somewhere!

So let's just summarize a little...

We decided the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music needed a record label, so we got together the class reps and began discussions as to what the label should release, what the label would stand for, who was allowed to submit to have their music released, how students would participate, etc.

It was a long discussion. And of course everyone had an opinion. And our meetings were at 920 on Tuesday nights. And therefore I was always in need of caffeine.

Regardless....WE HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN SOMEWHERE.

So here is the first draft of our mission statement for your enjoyment.

194 Recordings is a record label born out of the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at New York University.
